The Shaker: From The Idea To The Project

Discover also: Gene.iO Program ATIGE Program D4Gen Hackathon APOGEEBIO Program Appel à idées innovantes

The Shaker is a six-month cocktail of Science and Business to transform your biotech project into an innovative start-up.

The program is intended for holders of disruptive and promising projects in:

  • innovative therapies
  • industrial biotechnologies (food & agriculture, cosmetics, energy, materials, textiles, etc.)
  • computational genomics (AI, software, data analysis, etc.)

The Shaker recipe: an savvy mix of science and business

Science:

an equipped biotech lab open 24/7, workspaces + consumables

access to Genopole’s high-tech platforms

Business:

an introduction to entrepreneurship (intellectual property, markets and marketing, financing, etc.)

personalized accompaniment by a Genopole project manager

connections to public and private actors in biotech innovation

access to the biocluster’s technological platforms: mass spectrometry, electron microscopy, synthetic biology, imaging, cytometry, histology-anatomic pathology and more.

The six-month objectives:

– Scientific validation of your technology
– Development of your business project

How are Shaker projects selected?

The classes for the laureates begin in April and October (2 classes/year).
Project selection comprises three steps:

Stage #1: Call for candidates

Stage #2: Preparation for the submission of the project to the expert jury

Stage #3: Selection by an expert jury

The Shaker: your first step toward success!

Close to 70% of Shaker projects have resulted in the creation of a start-up

The Shaker: a springboard to launch your biotech start-up

Shaker Program - logo

The Shaker seeks to address the needs of those who have an innovative concept in biotech (health, environment, agritech/foodtech, bioindustry, bioeconomy, computational genomics…) but lack the premises and means needed to advance the project.

As a Shaker laureate, you will join the ecosystem of Genopole, a biocluster where entrepreneurs and researchers work and live together by design.

There, you will be able to refine your work thanks to the materials (furnished labs with supplied consumables (classic and specific to your project)), technological platforms and state of the art equipment made available to you, while also benefiting from an initiation in entrepreneurship.

What they have to say…

My advice to potential Shaker candidates is if their project is a fit for Genopole and needs technical development, don’t hesitate to submit a dossier,” concludes Nikola. The Shaker is the only program I know of that offers such pertinent accompaniment and infrastructures without costing thousands of euros us students don’t have!

I was alone at the time, I had not yet recruited my business partner. Shaker’s support on a human level was therefore very important to me at that time. I had just left school, with no experience of employment, let alone entrepreneurial experience. I had really wanted to set up my own company since fourth grade. The regular follow-up meetings with the business managers from Genopole Entreprise and the Shaker training courses gave me the guidance to do so. Otherwise, the process of setting up the business would have taken much longer. At Shaker, you are dealing with the specifics: the concepts of the business plan, intellectual property, communications … you are taught about these things and you apply them immediately. You work on your project and for your project. This is about much more than just theoretical awareness of entrepreneurship, as can be found elsewhere. I also greatly appreciated the cohesive nature of the class. We ate together all the time at the start-up incubator, we talked about where everyone was up to and how their projects were developing. It is very nice to work on your personal project in this kind of atmosphere!

For me, the centrepiece of Shaker’s system is access to an equipped laboratory. Without this, we would not have been able to test our idea and confirm our theories. This Biotech Lab is a real opportunity because, when you start an entrepreneurial adventure, you do not necessarily have relationships or the ability to secure space in a research laboratory. SynHelix was born following our participation in Shaker class 3. All our energy was focused on achieving scientific results. We succeeded in doing so, which was a sign for us to continue on that path and to formalise things by establishing the company.
